The provincial government is moving ahead with a 400 series to run from the 400 in Vaughan, south of Bolton, roughly across Old School Road and down Heritage Road, joining the 401 at the 407 area.  This will permanently impact some of our favourite (road) cycling routes as well as The Greenbelt, with stated benefits of greater connectivity between urban growth centres, enhanced people and goods movement, improved commuting and greater economic vitality. A second round of public info sessions is being held beginning this week:  Thurs Sept 19 4-8pm Venetian Salon, Chateau le Jardin Conference Car, 8440 Hwy 27, Woodridge, Thurs Sept 26 4-8pm Kinsmen Hall, Gellert Ctr, 10241 Eighth Line Georgetown, and Thurs Oct 3 4-8pm Peel Junior Farmers Hall, Brampton Fairgrounds 12942 Heart Lake Road, Caledon.  More info to be found by googling GTA West Corridor.

Great...now I will have the 410 to the west and east of me and the GTA west corridor to the north of Valleywood.  Yikes...is this progress?  Me thinks it is time for a change.  The traffic noise are getting worse and worse.

Firstly, this is not a new idea.  The 413 as it has was called has been in the books for 30+ years.  It was originally proposed to run from Milton to Bolton (that may be extended at some time) as a northern east-west corridor.   If memory is correct, one of the main uses was to be for transport of arrogate to Caledon in expectation of the urban and residential growth.  For those that do not know, as of five or six years ago, the estimated population of Caledon in 50 years is to be around 750K.  Yes 750,000.  Keeping in mind with the Green Belt, most of this growth is to be developed south of Old School Rd.  Oddly enough, I heard a report either last year or earlier this year the project had been cancelled.  I guess not.  As for cycling, around 5 or so years ago, just as the club was starting the road riding division, I received a call from the MTO inquiring if we or the cycling community used the intersection of HYWY 10 and Old School Rd.  My thought at the time was indeed this was regarding the proposed 413 and a inclusion for cycling.  I never heard anything further from them.

Leigh, the GTA West Corridor (Vaughan to 407/401 version) was shelved for a few years, then reactivated less than a year ago. A friend of ours is the chief project engineer and he assures me it's a go this time (although I know that could change, yet again).  I reviewed the proposed route and interchange locations at the public info session a couple months ago - it will run directly south of the Greenbelt boundary, and in fact pass through the Greenbelt just west of Bolton. With Ford's changing of position on Greenbelt development, I foresee development of Greenbelt land north of the 413 but below the Escarpment. Just my guess, when you combine Ford's position and that the mayor of Caledon does not seem to oppose it. Tax revenue, increased land values etc.  Adjacent roadways will need to be developed to handle entering/exiting vehicles.  So, much of construction to come.  The query you received about Old School and #10 was likely to do with traffic light installation, yes?

As you may know from recent media coverage and maybe my earlier post, the GTA West Corridor, aka Hwy 413, is proposed to run along Old School Rd from Vaughan to west Brampton, down Heritage Road and across the Credit River, to join the 401/407 interchange, cutting through portions of The Greenbelt and 2,000 acres of prime farmland. Interested in hearing an expert panel discuss pros and cons? Q&A will follow panelist presentations.
